New designs that steadily rose in popularity through 2010 have continued to gain popularity during 2011, one such genre of engagement ring, being Halo engagement rings. But what is a Halo engagement ring? Certainly not an indication of how angelic the owner might be (who are we to judge?) The style refers to a most important characteristic of the design, a surround of diamonds that encircles the setting, which is essentially the "halo" of the ring.

One of the other predominant features of halo engagement rings has to be the feature diamond, a single stone of a more significant size to the outer stones, the central feature, very often held simply and above a plain or diamond set band. This can be either a round brilliant cut diamond, or even a fancy shaped diamond. There are even designs that relate to a more vintage or art-deco feel to the engagement ring.

Certain designs of solitaire engagement rings, are without exception, true classics. Available in a variety of versions, they take a common theme, and weave the design into a variant of the classic twist. For many people, especially with the current economic climate, the one carat diamond ring is a fairly unobtainable and aspirational size for a diamond engagement ring. Highlighted as the ultimate token of love in many a DeBeers advert, the wonderous carat diamond ring signified the ultimate token of love and something that demanded a significant degree of saving or finance on the part of the individual purchasing the ring. As styles and designs increase with time, new possibilites make this item more affordable. There are a few handy hints and tips to purchase a full one carat diamond ring and here we suggest three options to help.

Firstly try spreading the weight between a range of diamonds within the ring. Since the price per carat of diamonds increases with the size of the stone, a one carat diamond ring will be much more expensive than, say, a seven stone diamond ring totalling one carat.

Secondly, if you are hell bent on purchasing a 1ct diamond solitaire (single stone) consider a lower colour or clarity (or both) diamond. You do not have to price yourself out of the market by thinking you need the best of both. A lower colour (for example J colour) will still appear white and by selecting SI1 clarity instead of higher you will make that diamond ring a little more affordable.

So you have read a great deal on certified diamonds. But for what reason? Is your diamond to be part of an engagement ring? If the answer is yes, then you are likely to be looking at engagement ring styles alongside educating yourself on diamonds. Pink Diamonds

Despite the wide publicity that pink diamonds have received, there is still a great deal of mystery surrounding these naturally coloured diamonds. Our aim here is to provide a brief introduction with a few facts regarding pink diamonds. Most of the world's pink diamonds come from the Argyle mine in Australia. Few make it onto the world scene, with the rare larger examples being sold privately before ever becoming available for purchase on the open diamond markets. The majority of pink diamond polished, are cut into fancy shaped diamonds as the classic round brilliant does little to enhance the colour of the stone. The shades vary and price is reflected by the intensity of pink within the diamond. Pale pink diamonds will not necessarily exhibit a noticeable hint of pink and stronger coloured varieties often display a more purplish pink colour rather than the desired baby pink colour people have in mind. The cost of these diamonds is in excess of tens of thousands of pounds even for smaller examples far below 1ct in weight. An intense, very high clarity diamond can command extremely high prices, which is very often why such examples are sold at auction. GIA is one of the most respected laboratories for certified pink diamonds and a laboratory certificate detailing the colour as intense, or even a mention of red in the description will enhance both the desirability and the price of such diamonds.

Certified Diamond Bracelets

Certified diamond jewellery is quite literally available depending on the requirements of the individual. One of the most elaborate and deacdent pieces of diamond jewellery which can also be certified has to be any one of a number of designs of diamond bracelets including amongst these, diamond tennis bracelets. Sometimes, such items can be created with a blanket certificate to encompass all diamonds within the piece. Where this is done, certain institutions certify the whole set by looking at the lowest colour and clarity diamond within the piece. By doing this, you can be assured that no diamond will be lower than the specified colour and clarity within the diamond bracelet. Simple yet very classic, the solitaire ring is as popular today as it ever was. Whether it is holding a certified or uncertified diamond, the elegant simplicity from the minimal setting is balanced and in harmony with the diamond. Lucida Rings

The Lucida style of ring was created by Tiffany & Co in order to provide a minimal setting for the Lucida diamond. Sourcing the ring components separately

Anyone looking to buy certified diamonds, will no doubt have a destination ultimately in mind. Whilst many people are buying loose diamonds to organise the rings themselves, the wise few will arrange for this to be done "in house." When I sell a single stone, I am happy to supply just the loose diamonds, or to make up solitaire engagement rings as a finished item.

The latter has several distinct advantages.

It takes years of experience working with diamonds and ring mounts to know which diamonds will fit a particular ring mount. If you order the wrong size ring mount, then this will literally be useless for the diamond.
Most jewellers are insured against breakage. If you arrange to buy a diamond and ring mount separately and arrange for the ring mount to be made up elsewhere, you might not be insured against breakage. If the setter chips the diamond, who's responsibility is this?
When you buy online, you are covered by distance selling regulations. If the ring does not arrive as expected, you are within your rights to return the item for a refund.

Very often, if you are purchasing online, you will no doubt be saving money anyway, compared to on the high street. The additional money you may save purchasing the individual components is never worth the risk you face when work is carried out by a third party.

Remember if you have the diamond set by a third party, make sure you are aware who carries the responibility if your diamond breaks during setting.

Certified Diamonds - AGS Certificates

It is commonplace nowdays for people to want a diamond certificate when they are purchasing solitaire diamond engagement rings, but there is a great deal of difference in the grading standards between one grading organisation and another. Provided the diamond certificate is from one of the main international grading laboratories, there should be no cause for concern. Such laboratories include the American Gem Society (AGS) Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) to name a few.

One of the laboratories to be considered the cream of diamond grading has to be the American Gem Society (AGS) Founded in 1934 the laboratory maintains some of the highest ethical and professional standards in the diamond industry and has one of the finest reputations in diamond grading. Each produced is an extremely detailed breakdown of your diamond, including a diagram showing the exact proportions of that specific diamond.

When buying a diamond, it is important to ask which diamond certificate is provided with the stone and ask to see a copy. There is much to be learnt regarding the details provided on a certificate. The finish and proportions of a diamond can affect the overall brilliance, so try not to necessarily seize the diamond that hits the lowest price.

Oval Cut Diamonds

For some strange reason, people either seem to love or hate oval brilliant cut diamonds. For me, personally, I love them. They capture the roundness of the traditional brilliant cut whilst stretching it along the axis to create a more unusual diamond shape. They are oval modified brilliants as referred to in a purely academic field and they are based on the round brilliant cut to which they bare most of their similarities to. The oval diamond was first introduced by Lazare Kaplan over 40 years ago.

Much will depend on the model of the stone for its aesthetic appearance, along with the depth of cut also. Too broad and the stone will appear merely off-round. Too long and the diamond appears "skinny." A pleasing shape is often 1.5 : 1 in terms of length to width ratio, with the margin being 1.4 : 1 to 1.6 : 1. Cutting the stone too shallow to gain maximum size, the cutter will only reduce the brilliance causing light to pass through the stone and not reflect back. Often a curious dark bow-tie effect can be seen as a result. Typically an oval brilliant cut diamond has 56 facets, but this can vary.

Set into a simple oval solitaire ring, this cut of diamond can look truly magnificent. Contemporary examples will include the four claw setting which will allow light to enter the diamond. An example includes this rather simple oval engagement ring. Other examples might include the solitaire below which features tapering open shoulders.

Ideal Cut Diamonds

Demand for Ideal cut diamonds has risen greatly in recent years, as more and more people realise the importance of the more elusive of the 4C's, "cut". Usually a term referring to round brilliant cuts, ideal cut best describes diamonds that have been cut to adhere to certain proportions that allow the maximum brilliance from a diamond. Many diamonds are cut too deeply in an attempt to gain the greatest weight from a diamond; to hit magical weights such as 1ct. Whether they are cut too deeply or too shallow, the diamonds most wonderful feature - the way it reflects light back is all too often lost or severely diminished.

Buying an ideal cut diamond is not necessarily the answer. Such diamonds command a premium over non ideal cut diamonds. A very good cut, however, is something worth considering when looking to purchase a diamond. If you feel strongly about finding a stone with the maximum brilliance, provided the clarity is good (we recommend above SI1) and ideal cut diamond will be a worthy consideration.

Diamond Fluorescence

For those of you who are new to certified diamonds, and trying to fathom out what certain terms mean, you may or may not have already come across this term. Diamond fluorescence is a characteristic that is usually noted on most certified diamond reports.

In essence, a diamond that is fluorescent, emits light whilst exposed to UV light. When the light is taken away, the emission stops. The time most typical for this to be seen is under UV light at a nightclub or under similar conditions. A diamond set into a ring will be seen to glow either slightly or fairly strongly. It is possible for diamonds to fluoresce in different shades, with blue fluorescence being the most common.

If the diamond exhibits blue fluorescence, this can affect the price slightly. Strong blue fluorescence often results in a very slightly discounted price compared those that do not. Sometimes, a slight milkiness can result from this fluorescence that reduces the overall brightness of the stone, but this is not always the case and each diamond should be observed for this reason.

Diamonds that are slightly lower in colour, i.e. are less white, can benefit from the presence of fluorescence. A stone slightly tinted yellow will sometimes appear whiter as a result of fluorescence in the stone, when viewed from above. Looking from the side however, the true diamond colour can still be observed against a white background.

This entails a series of skilled stages to accommodate your certified diamond. Despite the design or quantity of diamonds in engagement rings, each ring goes through a series of stages to achieve the stunning end result. The following information outlines some of these stages that are involved.

Engagement rings are intricate and extremely detailed and require a great deal of time and attention whilst being produced. This being said though, there is an enormous difference in the quality of such rings available.

Stage 1 - Selecting the diamonds. Unless your ring mount is being hand made to the diamond, it is often important to find a diamond that will correctly fit your ring mount. Some designs have a greater tolerance to size variation and allow for wider parameters in diamond measurements.

Stage 2 - Producing the ring mount. To provide the strongest and best fit, ring mounts are best made for the specific ring size and diamond measurement. This involves casting the ring mount in the preferred metal, before preparing the mount and removing any unwanted metal from the rough casting. Your ring mount might be composed of two parts in which case the ring shank (the part on your finger) will need to be joined to the setting (which holds the diamond) by a mounter.

Stage 3 - Hallmarking. Each ring has to be submitted to the Assay Office where it is hallmarked. This provides a legally required stamp, detailing in abbreviated form, the precious metal from which the ring is made.

Stage 4 - Setting the diamond. This is an extremely skilled process in which the diamond is set in place and secured within the ring. The claws or bezel need to hold the stone in place whilst appearing minimal and not too overbearing around the diamond.

Stage 5 - Polishing. The ring is now polished on a motorised wheel, where differing grades of material are used to bring the metal to a mirror like finish.

Stage 6 - Inspection. A crucial stage in which the ring is looked at to check all work necessary has been done to produce a high quality of finish.

The Princess Cut Diamond

The Princess cut diamond. One of the most popular of the fancy shapes of diamond available. For most people, the princess cut diamond marks something a little different to the round brilliant cut. Extra faceting also makes this style of diamond extremely bright, reflecting light back to the observer. The most noticeable characteristics are the sharp corners and the brilliant style of faceting. These facets run vertically along the pavilion as opposed to the step cut style of faceting associated with the Carre cut of diamonds. The Princess was developed in 1980-1981 and has remained one of the most popular shapes of diamond.

Set into engagement rings, this style of diamond usually influences four claws to be used (there are however other setting styles.) The box claw is a protective way of surrounding each claw with a small proportion of metal. This way, the most vulnerable part of the princess cut, ie. the corners are protected.

Princess cuts have 76 facets generally although this can vary. The most preferable proportions are square as opposed to slightly rectangular. Engagement rings styles are variable and abundant and it is possible to find a style for every taste.

GIA - The Gemological Institute of America

Seen as one of the most reliable diamond certification laboratories in the world, the GIA has built its reputation with strict grading standards to produce reliable diamond reports used across the world. For some, a certificate has no real significance, to other however, it is an essential item to accompany the purchase of a diamond. This is especially true when we are looking at better quality diamonds above the 0.33cts mark.

The Gemological Institute of America was established in 1931. Some of the worlds best diamonds have been graded by the GIA including the Hope Diamond. The GIA was the first to come up with the 4 C's of diamond value now used internationally.

We would love to hear your comments on your favourite diamond cut. One of the things I am frequently asked when selling online, relates to the actual size of the diamond. This is a difficult thing for people to imagine when not seeing the diamond "in the flesh." One way around this is to find out the typical diameter of the diamond weights you are thinking about. By getting an idea of the millimetre size, it is possible to gain an idea of how large the diamond will look when mounted in your ring. Here are a few basic diamond mm sizes for reference, upto 1ct in weight. These approximate sizes relate only to round brilliant cut diamonds. A Suitable Setting.

People are often keen to find a suitable ring mount which will allow the maximum amount of light to enter into the diamond. By keeping things very simple and opting for a simple four or six claw engagement ring, it should be possible to find an elegant design that will look modern, but which will not date over a period of time. A setting which allows light to enter into the pavilion of the diamond as well as throught the crown will provide a great deal of fire as light is thrown back. Some settings can almost encase the diamond which cuts down on the light entering. Design is all personal taste at the end of the day, but here we have a simple four claw setting which demonstrates this mimimal appearance.

Diamond Pendants

Diamond pendants are a stunning accessory to match rings and earrings. The ease with a diamond pendant is that it requires no sizing apart from the length of the chain. 18" is the normal length of chain but a choice is available.

Diamond pendants will come in a range of styles, shapes and qualities. From the ever popular round brilliant cut diamond pendants, in claw set or bezel set designs, to more elaborate fancy shaped diamond pendants. Incidentally it is the pear shaped diamond that is particularly suited to pendants due to its shape.

The mere touch of detail can change the look of the diamond completely. A princess cut for example, can be turned corner down, to produce a stunningly different show. This requires a perfectly square diamond to achieve this effect.

The slider diamond pendants are a design that allow the chain to slide through the back of the pendant. This creates a much more minimalistic appearance and focuses the attention on the diamond. Selecting Diamonds

Are you thinking about buying a diamond? If this is true, then there are some helpful pieces of advice to consider whilst looking. First of all, make yourself aware of the various shapes that are available. These vary enormously from the most popular round brilliant cut diamond, to the princess cut which follows as a close second. This is cut in a similar way, highly faceted but in the popular square shape.

Certain of these diamonds suit particular pieces of jewellery. Pear shapes, for example are perfectly suited for diamond pendants. Due to the tear drop shape, they perfectly complement either a claw set or bezel set diamond pendant. Other jewellery can be found using pearshapes such as engagement rings however.

Also remember, certain shapes are cut in a certain way and will give off more fire than others. An emeral cut diamond is step cut and produces less fire than a princess cut or radiant cut. This can and should influence your decision when purchasing diamonds. This said, it is more a matter of personal taste and at the end of the day it is the individual's taste (and money) that will determine the diamond purchased.

Loose Diamonds

Have you ever wondered how the small diamonds in jewellery start out? Well, after polishing, they are sold in parcels of mixed sizes, which are sold, and sieved into particular sizes for resale. The diamonds within each parcel can vary in quantity and care has to be taken whilst opening each parcel. These folded sheets are sometimes called Brefkas, and whenever diamonds are removed or added, the weights are recorded by the use of a finely calibrated balance. Certified Diamonds

There is often a little uncertainty when it comes to diamond certificates. For example what details will be provided about the diamond your are buying. Here we will try to explain a few of the specifications that you will find on a typical diamond certificate.

Shape and Cut

Fairly self explanatory, describing the shape of the diamond. Where terms such as "square modified brilliant," are used, this refers to the non commercial name, instead of Princess Cut as we know it more commonly as.

Carat Weight

Agains self explanatory. This tells us how heavy our diamond is. It will list the carat weight to two decimal points. 1.10cts for example.

Cut Grade

Depending on the proportions of the diamond facets, there will be a specific level of Cut attained, hence the cut grade. This can vary from Poor to Excellent.

Polish

This concerns the finish of the stone. An excellent polish is as good as you will achieve.

Symmetry

Not all diamonds are cut perfectly symmetrically and this offer an indication of how symmetrical your diamond will be. Even rounds often tend to vary slightly in the diameter around the diamond.

Measurements.

Usually the diameter (with rounds, very often 2 measurements are provided stating the minimum and maximum measurements around the diamond) With shapes, the length, breadth and depth of the diamond are noted.

Table

This is a percentage of the total area of the upper part of the diamond. A large table is often indicitive of a more spready diamond, but will not offer near ideal proportions.

Crown Height / Angle

This is the percentage of the diamonds total depth that lies above the girdle. The angle is how steep the sides incline on the upper part of the diamond.

Pavilion Depth / Angle

The same again, but lying below the girdle

Girdle thickness

The girdle is the ridge running around the diamond. This can be bruted, polished or faceted and the thickness can vary around the diamond.

Culet

This is the very bottom of the diamond. unless the diamond is an older style of cut (when a facet was often added to the bottom of the diamond) the culet should record "none" or "pointed"

Other details such as types of inclusions, and also the fluorescence will also be noted. Fluorescence can either be present or not at all. Highly fluorescent diamonds can occasionally appear a little milky and this can reduce value. In the case of slightly lower colour diamonds, fluorescence can actually increase the whiteness of the diamond when viewed from above.

Diamond Wedding Rings

Wedding rings are one of those items of jewellery, nobody is sure exactly when to buy. One of the worst mistakes possible is to buy far too late. One idea we would advise, is to buy your wedding rings about two months before the wedding. Remember to set aside the money for your wedding rings from the wedding budget. Certified Diamonds

There are so many different laboratories, all providing reports on diamonds, that it is no wonder the consumer gets confused. There are numerous laboratories, but a handful of these are internationally recognised. Some smaller laboratories, however, are just as reputable, but here we are going to look at some of the larger organisations for certified diamonds.

GIA - Probably considered one of the best. The Gemological Institute of America has been paving the way for diamond certification for many years. They issue various diamond grading reports, varying from the passport size to the full folding report.

AGS - The Americal Gem Society are just about as good as it gets. Their standards are probably the highest in the diamond industry. Very reputable and always a high standard of grading.

IGI - International Gemological Institute. Based in Antwerp, IGI provide many grading reports and are a good laboratory.

HRD - Hoge Voor Diamant - Based in Antwerp, this laboratory along with IGI provide a very large proportion of the diamond certificates produced. HRD have good standards and are always a good trusted source for diamond reports.

Record Sale of Blue Certified Diamond

October saw a record broken in the price obtained for an extremely rare, natural coloured diamond. The auction took place at Sothebys in Hong Kong. The diamond which was set in a ring fetched a staggering $7981, 835 for the 6.04cts emerald cut diamond which had a colour described as fancy vivid blue. This was a natural coloured fancy blue diamond and the sale broke a new record for the highest price per carat paid for any gemstone. I would have bought it myself but I was looking for a pair! Many of these certified diamonds fetch amazing prices and a large proportion are sold at private auctions with sealed bids.

The Tiffany Setting

It has to be one of the most beautiful yet simple styles of diamond ring. Born out of simplicity and concentrating on just one thing, the diamond. The Tiffany setting is probably the most classic of all the diamond engagement ring settings. It is probably the one style we think about when we picture a diamond ring. The stone, firmly held within 6 claws (often referred to as prongs.) This part of the ring, the setting is joined to the part of the ring we call the shank. It meets the Tiffany setting, in this case, at a point referred to as the shoulders. The Tiffany setting is extremely simple yet can be designed into numerous variations. Certified Diamonds - Do I need one?

I am often asked to produce an engagement ring for someone in record time, and I am always more than happy to do so. This though can be difficult if a certified diamond of a specific colour and purity is required. It is not always necessary to buy a certified diamond, as long as you are buying from a trusted source. That source should be willing to put the colour and purity of the diamond on your documentation. Very often, I find clients a very good diamond at a very keen price by providing a non certified diamond that is literally the best stone out of a parcel. We usually call the "pick" or "cream" of a parcel and many people will charge a proportion more for these "better" diamonds. When these stones are certified, their better grades are down on paper and they are sold at the corresponding price.

Many stones of a good colour and clarity above 1 carat will be certified automatically, but many of the smaller diamonds that are not a premium colour and clarity will arrive in parcels. It is from these parcels that we can often provide a stone at extremely good value for money.

The term "smoked" is a general term given to the effect of oxidation on the surface of a diamond. Resulting from too much direct heat, on occasions, diamonds can develop a smoky sheen to the surface giving the diamond an almost milky appearance. Maybe this is enough to get you thinking about lunch, but it is actually the cut of diamond I am talking about. Baguette diamonds are step cut diamonds that are rectangular and have the corners, unlike emerald cut diamonds. The typical proportions present a stone where the width is approximately half the measurement of the length. For example, a typical small size would be 4X2mm where 4mm is the length. Due to the faceting and large table, any small marks are plainly visible and for this reason it is advisable to buy baguettes that are at least SI1 clarity unless you are happy with inclusions being visible.

Trilliant

Trilliant diamonds are triangular shaped diamonds that have been polished in a similar way to brilliant cuts. Hence the name trilliant which is a combination of triangle and brilliant. They can vary enormously in size depending on how deeply they are cut. When a trilliant is cut very shallow, it is possible to gain a huge spread across the stone. On the other hand, a thickly cut stone will look much smaller. Many will argue that a trilliant that is very spready, will lack the fire of a deeper stone and will look see-through almost. I have see beautiful pendants made with shallow stones that are very large for the money and have detail behind the stone to add that extra depth when the light passed through.

Girdle

The outer edge of the diamond that separates the upper from the lower part of the diamond. The girdle runs around the diamond and can be finished in various ways. The diamond girdle can be bruted, with more of a matt finish, where the diamond has literally been ground during the polishing process. It can also be polished or faceted or a combination. Round brilliants normally have a polished faceted girdle. The thickness of the girdle can also vary from very thin to very thick and you will usually find this information on a diamond certificate(if that diamond has undergone certification. Where the cert. number is micro-etched onto the diamond, the girdle is very often where the number is written, though these numbers are not visible to the naked eye.

Culet (Pronounced Kewlay)

A small facet that where present is at the bottom of the stone, where the pavilion facets come to a point. Commonly found on Older Cut diamonds, the facet appears through the table (top facet) as a small round central feature. Diamond certificates will usually indicate whether or not a culet is present.

Inclusion

Small marks or the lack of small marks within a diamond determine the clarity of the stone. These small marks are commonly called inclusions. They can be of many shapes sizes and colours. Most common are white or black inclusions. They are also called pique marks. Depending on whether the marks are slightly visible to the naked eye, diamonds are graded accordingly. Where diamonds have marks slightly visible to the naked eye, they will be graded P1 (pronounced PK1) P2, a little more marked, or P3 very very marked. Within the quality P3 there is still a great deal of difference between a good P3 and a very bad P3 but since this is the lowest clarity of diamond, this clarity grade encompasses better and worse P3 clarity diamonds. The ability to determine this grade is the result of experience on behalf of the Gemologist.

Melee is used to describe assorted diamonds of a particular size range. Round melee can be either of the following.

Small Melee - 0.025cts upto 0.07cts. (1.8mm upto 2.6mm approx)

Larger Melee - 0.08cts upto 0.18cts (2.7mm upto 3.7mm approx)

These sizes are normally purchased in assorted parcels. Within the industry, buying a single size would demand a premium price, so by buying a parcel with a range of sizes, diamond merchants can obtain the parcels for a much keener price. It is then their job to sell particular sizes to customers who have a need for those diamond sizes. They themselves will sell individual sizes at a slight premium to offset the cost of replacing depleted diamonds of a particular size.

Princess cut diamonds are square or rectangular modified brilliant cut diamonds. They have immense fire and are one of the brightest cuts of diamond. They are available from 1mm in size upwards in almost every colour and clarity. Princess cut diamonds have uncut corners and are typically fairly square.

The Princess cut diamond was created in 1980 by Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz of the Los Angeles located Ambar Diamonds.

Princess cut diamonds generally have 76 facets giving a great deal of brilliance to the stones. The best proportions are 1:1 giving a square appearance to the stone. This however is not crucial unless the following style is being adopted. In the case of a ring like this, the diamond needs to be precisely square otherwise the symmetry will be lost.

Princess cut diamonds are very well suited to channel set rings, since the edge of each diamond will fit almost seamlessly against the next diamond. Next to rounds, princess cut diamonds are one of the most popular cuts of diamonds available.

If you are thinking about buying a diamond wedding ring then here is a little advice you might find helpful. Personal taste is the most important part of what you choose. If you have a diamond engagement ring then you might consider matching the type of diamond in the wedding ring to the engagement ring. For example if you have a princess cut in your engagement ring, then emerald cuts (which are step cut and not brilliant cut) will not match. In this instance, small princess cuts would be more advantageous and will carry the theme between rings.

Which Ring Width?

Make sure you choose a width that will allow stones to be set into the wedding band, if the ring is not already set. If you choose a 3mm width, this would be ideal to have 1.5mm diamonds set into it. Never settle for a particular style if you want a specific number of layout of diamonds. These days, a plain wedding ring can be customised to whatever style you desire.

One of the most important things is to look around. There are so many wedding rings available, the consumer is spoiled for choice. Taking a picture of the ideal ring to your jeweller will allow him to provide you with a similar or suitable alternative to your tastes.

How do I get my wedding ring to fit my engagement ring?

If you can be apart from your engagement ring for a few days, most jewellers will be able provide a perfect fitting wedding ring to sit alongside your engagement ring. In the case of many smaller engagement rings, this may not be necessary, but if you have a ring where the stone setting creates an awkward profile, then it is easily remedied. It is also a perfect opportunity to have your engagement ring re polished at the same time to bring it back to "as new," condition.

Whether they are plain, patterned, diamond set or shaped, it is just a matter of personal taste. With the choice of wedding rings available, there is no excuse not to find the perfect wedding rings.

Coloured Diamonds

Coloured Diamonds

Coloured diamonds are available in many different colours and shades. There are two main choices for the buyer. Natural coloured diamonds and enhanced coloured diamonds.

What is the difference between Natural and Enhanced coloured diamonds?

Natural coloured diamonds are very rare. A very small proportion of the world's mined diamonds are naturally fancy coloured. We say fancy coloured because this distinguishes between diamonds that have minor hues of poorly defined colour and diamond that exhibit true fancy colour. Because of the rarity, a high price is demanded for natural fancy coloured diamonds. Many do not even make it onto the world's diamond market and are sold at private auction. As a good rule of thumb, the price per carat to expect for a fairly intense colour is the price per carat multiplied by a thousand (in this instance we will use sterling) pounds. So a quarter carat (0.25cts) natural green diamond might cost approximately £25 000 per carat as a guide. This is not exact, but it merely shows the high price one can expect when looking for natural coloured diamonds.

Coloured diamonds can be found in a much more affordable way. Enhanced natural coloured diamonds are natural white diamonds that have undergone treatment (there are various methods) to produce strong colourful shades within the diamonds. One particularly good technique is electron acceleration. An electron beam is used to change the atomic structure of the diamond slightly, the result being a change in the way light is reflected from the diamond. We can find magnificent shades of blue, green yellow, brownish orange and even black through this technique.

In fact this produces an intense colour that is always sought after in coloured diamonds. Black diamonds treated in this way avoid the often poorly polished surface (due to inclusions) that natural black diamonds often possess.

Certified Diamonds - Necessary?

Certified diamonds are something we all know provides the shopper with the reassurance that they need when buying a diamond. They provide a detailed report that the stone is what it is being sold as. The report is produced under laboratory conditions using precise equipment. The customer can then rest assured that the diamonds purchased are the colour and grade they are sold as.

Many of the smaller diamonds under 1ct that are graded by the Gemmological Institute of America, are provided with the Certificate Number etched onto the girdle of the stone. This is almost impossible to see with the naked eye. It can just be seek with a 10x loupe. This number can be referred back to the certificate easily.

With smaller diamonds (under 0.40cts) the cost of the certificate adds unneccessary expense to the stone. It is basically a larger proportion of the price of the diamond. If you are buying from a trusted source then it is not really necessary for you have a diamond certificate. If you are in any doubt about the credibility of who you are buying from, check to see if they are a part of any professional body who you can contact, such as the British Jewellers association or the National Association of Goldsmiths.

It is often better diamonds that are certified and one small grade can mean a great deal of difference in price to a dealer. Lower colour and clarity diamonds are often uncertified. These diamonds often provide very good value for money especially when it is size as opposed to quality that is desired. As mentioned before, check you are buying from a credible source who can reassure you of the quality of the diamond you are considering buying.
